Baked ham honey recipe with real honey

Baked Ham Honey Recipe for the palate that knows the finest comes to those who choose the best. A baked ham honey recipe has honey in it and not just any honey, NO SUBSTITUTE, use real honey! Choosing a ham is of equal importance before you start on this holiday delight.

If you know that each pound of ham with bone-in will accommodate 3 to 4 servings, and you like a spiral cut for ease and presentation of serving, then remove all the guessing and buy a pre-smoked spiral cut ham that weighs enough to serve all of your guests. Ask your butcher to recommend a brand of ham that is most popular by taste. The cheapest is not always the finest table fare. You have met the greatest of criteria to prepare your  baked ham honey recipe.

The holiday hams are notoriously dry. Throw away all instructions for cooking your ham. Place the whole clove completely within the spiral cuts even with the outside of the ham, evenly spaced over the entire ham. Now get a baking bag, found in the baking supply isle and sometimes found near food storage bags, (“ziplock”), that will accommodate the weight (size) of your ham. Flour the bag with 1 tablespoon of flour, hold closed and shake. Insert the ham in the bag. Place the bagged ham in a baking dish Lay the ham fat side up in the dish. Drizzle half of the liquid star thistle honey glaze over the ham (help by opening the spiral to allow honey glaze to flow inside as well as out of the ham, then close and secure the bag with supplied tie. Pour in one can of chicken broth directly into the ban bottom, (not over the ham) so that the ham is sitting in the broth. Poke the bag 5 to 10 times on top (small holes, ice pick or two pronged serving fork) of bag. Start your  baked ham honey recipe by baking the ham for 13 minutes per pound in the plastic oven bag, (The box containing the baking bag MUST say OVEN BAG, or BAKING BAG, IF IT DOES NOT, DON”T USE IT! Cook the glazed ham in 325 degree oven.

The question is: Can I use an uncut ham to make the baked ham honey recipe?
Answer: Yes you can, choosing a ham is harder unless you know that the upper part of the ham carves easier and has more meat on it. Carve the ham after cooking time has 30 minutes left to cook. Dry-Cured Ham, Wet-Cured Ham, Boiled Ham and Uncooked Ham should all be avoided when preparing the baked ham honey recipe.

    • Whole or half smoked ham, (usually fully cooked)
    • Baking bag, large (19″ x 23 ½”) for whole ham, small, (14″x20″) for a half ham
    • 1/4 cup whole cloves
    • 1/4 cup dark corn syrup
    • 2 cups Star Thistle Honey
    • 2/3 cup unsalted butter
    • 15 oz. chicken broth

Heat the above mixture in a double boiler (do not boil). Keep warm on stove top.
    Dry Glaze
    • 1/3 cup brown sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
    • 1/4 teaspoon clove
    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • pinch of allspice
    • pinch of ginger

Remove from oven 30 minutes before baking time is complete. Carefully cut the top of the bag so that it is removed down to the top of the baking pan. Now drizzle half of the remaining star thistle honey glaze.

In 15 minutes baste again with remainder of honey glaze. Replace for remaining time if you have a baker’s propane torch.

I f you do not have the baker’s torch, sprinkle the Dry Glaze over the ham and place under the “broiler” for last 10 minutes.

If you do have a baker’s torch (used to caramelize sugar, as in browning the meringue on pies), apply the dry glaze after the cooking time is up with the ham out of the oven (on top of the stove). Use the propane torch to slightly caramelize the honey glaze and dry glaze. You are now ready to serve. Fine Baked Ham honey Recipe, includes only real honey. Star thistle honey, a fine choice for honey baked ham or gourmet honey treats.
